The Impact of Rigid Support on Large Scale Forms

How the rigidity of your bat prevents the common cracking and warping of expansive ceramic bases.

Nothing is more disheartening than seeing an 'S' crack form in the base of a beautiful platter during the drying process. While many potters blame their clay body or their drying speed, the culprit is often the bat itself. If the support surface flexes even slightly when moved, the clay base experiences micro-stress.

Eliminating Flex During Transport

Our professional systems are built with a thickness that resists even the slightest deflection. When you lift a heavy piece off the wheel, the Probat remains perfectly rigid, ensuring the base of your pot stays in the exact state it was when thrown. This rigidity is the key to successfully moving large-scale work to the drying shelf.

Uniform Drying and Surface Tension

The material composition of our bats helps manage the moisture at the bottom of the pot. By providing a consistent, non-warping surface, the clay can shrink uniformly across the entire diameter. This reduced tension at the base significantly lowers the risk of structural failure during the leather-hard stage.
